Renewed Refinery

Client aims to pivot its refinery away from processing crude oil, instead using a variety of renewable feedstocks to produce lower-carbon transportation fuels. The facility had an initial production capacity of 800 million gallons per year (52,000 BPD) of renewable diesel, renewable gasoline, and sustainable aviation fuel.

Renewable fuels from the converted facility, which after the renewed refinery is operational will produce up to 1 billion gallons per year (65,000 BPD), stand to slash lifecycle carbon emissions by an estimated 65%. That’s the equivalent of taking 1.4 million cars off California roads each year.

The project was executed with two work scopes.  The first was the greenfield (PTA) portion that included two food grade trains with utilities to treat and purify Fat, Oil, and Grease (FOG) into feed stock that can be processed in hydrocracker trains.  The second (IOS) is the revamp of the existing refinery units retained to make fuels.

Main Automation Contractor (MAC)

EDG TECH was selected as the Main Automation Contractor for this project. The following scope areas were included as part of the MAC:

  • Participated in system architecture design of Rockwell and Honeywell system
  • Developed control narratives for the IOS portion in collaboration with owner engineers
  • Configured networks, servers, workstations, thin clients, and virtual machines
  • Programming of primary PLCs, FactoryTalk HMI and Historian, and Honeywell Experion for SCADA. PLC systems utilized ASI bus, Ethernet IP, and hardwired instruments.  Used Matrikon OPC server infrastructure for Ethernet IP to OPC and aggregation of PLC interface data
  • Implementation of equipment modules and unit procedures for fat, soybean oil, and grease processing using S88 principles
  • Configuration of Honeywell EIM interfaces for other package PLCs
  • Configuration of PCDI for other package PLCs
  • Configuration of Honeywell C300, ACE, HPM, and AM based control strategies
  • Configuration of all Honeywell Experion HMI
  • Operator training simulators for PTA and IOS
  • Loop check, commissioning, and start support

Spodumene Refinery

Main Automation Contractor

This venture is a $375M project to refine spodumene near Corpus Christi, Texas.  The plant will produce battery-grade lithium hydroxide to supply the battery-supplier industry in the United States.

Main automation contractor (MAC)

EDG TECH was selected as the MAC for this project. The following scope areas were included as part of the MAC:

  • Process control and safety engineering including design of equipment modules, state-based controls, instrumentation, and other process modifications to support control objectives
  • Implementation of control strategies including base control, complex loops, equipment modules, and state-based controls
  • Implementation of third-party interfacing with VFDs and third-party package PLCs
  • Motor Control Center (MCC) engineering and design
  • Business, operations, and maintenance enterprise software infrastructure and integration
